Recognizing the historical heritage, the promise, and the reinforcing power of our progressive ideas, we gather, out of the multitude of progressive proclamations from the founding days of our nation to the present, a single statement we can hold in our hands.
This statement of principles is a promise that can, like a river source, feed all the diverse yet connected streams of progressive thinking, living, and governing in which we engage and so help us to see how these streams, some small in themselves, can replenish a sea of change.
We can renew democracy only if we truly want democracy.
