The Promise in Elections
Elections are a critical tool for keeping the people's representatives accountable to the people. Elections alone do not make a democracy—we the people exercise our power by thinking consciously about our progressive principles, speaking up for what we believe, and living our beliefs in the choices we make every day. And elections are not yet as democratic as they should be—wealth influences our elected officials because of the out-dated system of campaign funding from corporations and private individuals. All that having been said, it is also true that the recurrence of elections means that our representatives have to keep an eye on the voters. For this simple reason, elections make a difference, and if we are not voting in elections, then we as citizens are not fulfilling our responsibility to govern.
